With an export quota amounting to 96 per cent, mining technology is one of the most export oriented branches of the German engineering industry. VDMA Mining represents well-known, mainly medium-sized companies from the sectors open cast mining/materials handling, underground mining, mining processing technology and consulting, research and development.
145 companies merged in VDMA Mining representing more than 90 per cent of the entire trade volume.
The last meeting of this year was held with record partcipation and dealt mainly with Australia, China and Indonesia. VDMA China presented the updated "Mining Study China". The German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Sydney, explained the situation of the Australian mining industry.
156 participants from 9 nations participated in the 1st virtual Industry Meeting Mining. The advantages and disadvantages of virtual events can hardly be expressed more strongly. The number of participants and -countries is a record: but these figures cannot replace the lack of personal exchange.

We had invited to a two-hour event on Central Asia on 23 November 2020. Presentations shown will be provided on request. Resonance was very good. Most of the participants were VDMA member companies being active in the Central Asian region.
The BMWi-sponsored buyers' trip with guests from Peru and Chile took place from 16 to 20 November 2020. Originally, a presence visit was planned, the highlight of which was aimed at the participation in the VDMA Industry Meeting Mining in Essen. Nevertheless, the virtual implementation also led to an exciting week with exchange and mutual learning.
From 26 to 29 October 2020, a digital business trip on the Mexican mining industry sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) was held. A total of 8 German suppliers took part and presented themselves in various formats to the Mexican customer industry.
We will have to get used to it. Hearing the traditional German miners’ greeting “Glückauf” (roughly equivalent to Godspeed or simply good luck) will soon be a thing of the past. Mining production will be fully automated in the foreseeable future.
The Executive Board perceives a spreading increase of trade barriers due to protectionism, an increasing trend towards localisation and a decreasing willingness to buy and pay "Made in Germany". This is compounded by an increasingly difficult geopolitical situation, in which Russia and China - and also the USA - are trying to strengthen their influence by exerting pressure on all levels.
